About Us

Catamaran Charters started operating in January 2004.

The Catamaran Charters Team consist of family members, Astrid and Fred Deetlefs, Willi and Sven Deetlefs (the sons), Daniela and Marko Jansen Van Vuuren (Daughter and Son-In-Law). Willi Probst (Father of Astrid Deetlefs).

To complete the team, we also have Paulus Shikongo and Leonard Amukwaya.

Onboard we also have our volunteer Photographer: Mrs. Orlanda Sardinha.

Our first Catamaran: ‘Fairweather 1’

Fairweather 1’ was owned and build by Mr. Ronny Roos in Cape Town. Mr. Roos had used the 40’Catamaran for charter purposes in the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. In November 2003, Fred and Astrid Deetlefs purchased the lovely two-hull yacht in Cape Town and in beginning December 2003, 3 yachts men from Mr. Roos prepared themselves for the journey along the coast to deliver the catamaran in the Walvis Bay Harbour. 4 Days of sailing and rough sea – ‘Fairweather 1’ arrived safely!

Fairweather 1’ remained in good hands and in the charter business.

Towards the end of 2004 the Catamaran Charters Team decided that an upgrade was soon needed – to be able to target the more luxurious market.

Fairweather 1’ was then advertised and the search began for a ‘new’ boat.

With ‘Fairweather 1’ being such a beautiful yacht, she was sold quicker than hoped for. In January 2005 a buyer had booked her, putting pressure on the Team to find another catamaran. Luckily time was on our side and only by the 01st of April 2005, the Team had to officially say ‘good-bye’.

Even though it was heart sore on the one side – there was excitement on the other. The Team had found another perfect catamaran!

Our second Catamaran: ‘Silverwind’

Fred had once again chosen his beauty in Cape Town….a 45’ Royal Cape Catamaran, named ‘Biznizz’.

Biznizz’ was build in 1999 by Mr. G. Buckle, from Royal Cape Cat in Durban. She was only launched in the year 2000 and stayed in the ownership of one owner only.

Furnished in oak interior, 6 cabins with on-suite toilets, broad swim platform for the seals, trampolines, spacious deck seating, big saloon area, microwave, television…what more could one ask for?

So, with the first window of good weather, 20th April 2005, Mr. Adrian Kuttel and Mr. Evert Groenewald set sail from Cape Town’s Harbour. Racing against time and weather, they arrived 5 days later at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club – all in one piece!

The beautiful 45’ Royal Cape Catamaran had a name change from ‘Biznizz’ to ‘Silverwind’ with in the first week of arrival.

Silverwind’ had been swooshed in with good fortune. Being in ownership of Catamaran Charters for less than 2 months she had appeared in all Namibian coastal newspapers and even had the privilege of having the Miss Namibia 2005 photo-shoot on board for the Diet Pepsi credits.

With the business growing by becoming more popular – we soon realized that ‘Silverwind’ couldn’t do this all on her own anymore…we needed another catamaran…

Our third Catamaran: ‘Silversand’

This time Astrid joined Fred on the journey to search and inspect catamarans that where on the market. After a couple of flights to South Africa – they had finally found one that would be of standard and to join ‘Silverwind’ to form a fleet.

‘Silversand’ left us in awe with her size and comfort. She’s a 60’ Simonis Catamaran, and to many that have seen and been on her, might still know her as ‘The Islander’.

She was purchased from Mr. Johan Basson in Mykanos, Langebaan where she had also been in the charter business. Mr. Basson had customized her to suit the needs of his clients and made her more ‘comfortable’ – which makes it very easy for guests to step aboard…and relax.

‘Silversand’ was obviously meant to be. Astrid and Fred returned to Walvis Bay to arrange for paper work. A few days later, Fred returned to Cape Town to prepare ‘Silversand’ for the voyage up the West Coast .

Willi and Orlanda joined Fred on the Friday of the 13 th April 2007. By lunch the next day, the excited crew: Mr. John Martin (Skipper), Mr. Kevin Tate (Second Mate), Willi and Orlanda as Deck hands waving to the crying crowd ashore…with anticipation for the 4 days at sea. While leaving ashore Mr. Basson who is waving his yacht farewell and not knowing when he’ll see her again (Hopefully soon Mr. Basson..). Next to him, a proud new owner: Fred – waving to the crew aboard with just as much anticipation as the crew members themselves .

She arrived in Walvis Bay on the 18th April 2007 and was welcomed into Namibian waters with excitement beyond belief. ‘The Islander’ had a name change within the first week of her arrival and is now known as ‘Silversand’.

Proud to say - our fleet now consist of Silverwind and Silversand - the two biggest catamarans along the Namibian Coast.
